Tension N = cable weight kg/m x straight length m x friction coefficient x 9.80665

Sidewall pressure N/m = tension N / bend radius m

Utilization percent = calculated value / entered limit x 100

Formula variables

  • Cable weight is the loaded cable weight per metre.
  • Straight length is the straight-pull route length used for this simplified screen.
  • Friction coefficient is the entered pull-planning assumption.
  • Limits are user-entered manufacturer or project review values.

Assumptions

  • Straight-pull tension is estimated from cable weight, straight length, friction coefficient, and gravity.
  • Sidewall pressure is estimated from calculated tension divided by bend radius.
  • The entered pulling and sidewall limits must come from cable manufacturer or project engineering data.
  • This does not model compound bends, vertical pulls, capstan effect, jam ratio, lubricant compatibility, or reel setup.

Examples

Straight pull example. A 2 kg/m cable over 100 m at 0.5 friction estimates about 981 N pulling tension and 1634 N/m sidewall pressure at a 0.6 m bend radius.

Limit workflow. Use the result as a rough screen only, then compare against cable manufacturer pulling and sidewall limits.
